(Chicago)    Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Tuesday that Divvy has started its first major expansion and will nearly double its current service area, according to a statement from the Chicago Department of Transportation.

By June, the bike share system will reach north to Touhy Avenue, south to 85th Street and west to Pulaski Road, according to CDOT.

When the project is completed, Divvy will have 476 total stations and 4,760 bikes, according to the statement. The expansion will double the service area from about 44.1 square miles to 86.7 miles.

The expansion will give Chicago the most bike share stations and largest service area in North America, according to the statement.

“Bike sharing like Divvy works best when more neighborhoods are served, and in the next few months Chicago will have the largest service area in North America,” Emanuel said in the statement.

“We are encouraged by Divvy’s popularity, and this expansion will ensure more residents in more neighborhoods can access this system,” Emanuel said.

As stations are up and running, they will be added to the bike sharing service website at http://www.divvybikes.com/stations.
