The night of the stabbing, two siblings and a friend met several people while headed to Taylor-Lauridsen Park and agreed to give them a ride and hang out, according to prosecutors.

Shortly after 3 a.m., they arrived at the park and met up with a larger group, authorities said. That’s where Kevin Hoynes, 21, one of the three who hitched a ride, got into an argument with another person, prosecutors said.

The male sibling, 26, tried to defuse the argument, but Hoynes and the person he was arguing with turned on him, prosecutors claim.

His 30-year-old sister tried to intervene, but she also was attacked by as many as 10 people, prosecutors said. The siblings’ friend also was attacked.

One of the attackers, Courtney Vega, 19, pulled a knife and stabbed the female sibling in the arm while she as on the ground, and then stabbed the male sibling twice in the chest, authorities claim.

Vega then handed the knife to Hoynes, who stabbed the male sibling four times in the ribs, prosecutors said. He suffered a punctured lung.

In a television news interview, the sister said the attackers shouted racial slurs at the victims, who are black. She also wrote about the attack on Facebook, describing how a peaceful experience turned bad. The post included graphic photos of her injuries. All three victims were treated at Stroger Hospital and released.

McEvoy, Vega and Hoynes, as well as co-defendants David Rice, 21, and Joya Urbikas, 18, were each charged with four counts of aggravated assault, two counts of attempted murder and one count of mob action.

Vega, Hoynes, Rice and Urbikas are part of the Insane Deuces street gang, according to court records.
