Elgin man gets probation for hacking co-worker’s email

(ST. CHARLES) A northwest suburban man who hacked into his co-worker’s email account 13 times in one month in 2010 has sentenced to probation.

Robert Beeter, 53, of Elgin pleaded guilty Thursday to one felony count of identity theft and was sentenced to two years probation, according to the Kane County state’s attorney’s office.

In August 2010, Beeter used a co-worker’s personal email log-in and password to access their personal email account 13 times, according to prosecutors.

He has been free on $2,500 bond since his arrest in May 2013.

Beeter must also complete 50 hours of community service, pay $1,130 in fines, have no contact with the victim, and submit his smart phone and computer for forensic examinations to make sure he is not using them for illegal activity, prosecutors said.
