Mayor Emanuel Opens the Door to Garbage Collection Fee

By John Dempsey, WLS News

(CHICAGO) Chicagoans may have to start paying a fee to get the city to collect their garbage.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel told WLS Political Editor Bill Cameron he has been meeting with aldermen to find new ways for the city to raise money. The Mayor says there is building consensus around a fee for garbage collection, similar to the fees collected in other communities throughout Illinois and across the country.

Also, the Mayor says aldermen seem to be in favor of taxing e-cigarettes and other tobacco products that are not cigarettes. Emanuel also says the city can save five million dollars through various budget reforms. Emanuel is expected to also propose a property tax increase for Chicago, but he will not disclose the size of the increase, until he announces more spending cuts.

The Mayor made his comments during the taping of “Connected to Chicago”, which is heard every Sunday night at 7 on WLS-AM 890.
