(CHICAGO) One week after a Federal Judge found that a top ranking City of Chicago attorney withheld evidence in a police shooting trial, the city is hiring former U.S. Attorney Dan Webb, to investigate possible misconduct in the City Law Department.

Corporation Counsel Stephen Patton says Webb will examine policies and practices in the Law Department’s Federal Civil Rights Litigation Division.   Last week, Federal Judge Edmond Chang found that veteran City Lawyer Jordan Marsh, intentionally withheld evidence and misled the judge, in the trial of a lawsuit filed by the family of
Darius Pinex, who was shot and killed by Chicago Police in 2011.

Webb, whom the city will pay 295 dollars an hour, previously investigated the killing of David Koschman at the hands of former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s nephew Richard Vanecko.    Vanecko ended up pleading guilty for his role in Koschman’s death after allegations that an initial police cover up protected Vanecko from charges because of political clout.

Webb is a partner at he powerful Chicago Law Firm of Winston and Strawn.   As U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois in the 1980’s, he led the Operation Greylord investigation into corruption in the Cook County Courts.
