(CHICAGO) A man and woman have ben charged with attacking a candidate for the Illinois House of Representatives outside his campaign office earlier this month.

Bradley Fichter and Jessica Soto, both 26, each face three felony counts of aggravated battery in connection with the March 6 attack of former state representative candidate Robert Zwolinski outside his campaign office in the 800 block of North Ashland, officials said. Fichter was also charged with filing a false police report, another felony.

The 30-year-old approached two people stapling posters outside his campaign office at 823 N. Ashland about 9:15 p.m., according to Chicago Police.

Police said Fichter and Soto were arguing with Zwolinski before hitting him in the head with a bottle “and metal object.”

Zwolinski previously alleged in a statement that the posters supported his Democratic primary opponent, incumbent State Rep. Cynthia Soto, who took office in 2001 for the district, which includes parts of Bucktown, Humboldt Park, Logan Square and Ukrainian Village.

Zwolinski said he suffered a laceration to his face after Soto shot a staple gun into his forehead. Police said he refused medical treatment at the scene.

Fichter and Soto were taken into police custody Wednesday and are scheduled to appear in bond court Friday.

Soto defeated Zwolinski in Tuesday’s primary election.
