Teen boy faces gun, drug charges after St. Charles traffic stop

(ST. CHARLES) A 17-year-old boy is facing weapon and drug charges after a traffic stop Sunday night in west suburban St. Charles.

An officer stopped a red Hyundai Sonata for speeding in the 1000 block of West Main Street shortly before 10 p.m., according to a statement from St. Charles police. The driver was a 17-year-old boy from Elgin.

Upon approaching the car, the officer smelled marijuana and noticed “flakes of a green leafy substance on the driver’s sweatshirt,” police said.

A subsequent search of the car turned up two plastic baggies of pot in the trunk and a loaded gun hidden in the dash, according to police. The gun, a .38 special, had a defaced serial number.

The boy was arrested and charged with one felony count of defacing the identification mark of a firearm, two felony counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and a misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana between 2.5 and 10 grams, police said.

He was processed and taken to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center for a detention hearing, according to police.
