(LANSING) A gunman was shot to death by a Lansing police officer Thursday afternoon after the suspect opened fire, wounding another officer outside a grocery store in the south suburb.

Officers responded about 3:30 p.m. to a call of a retail theft at Ultra Foods at 16821 Torrence Ave., according to Lansing police.

An officer chased someone that was spotted running away from the store and a struggle ensued in the parking lot, police said. The suspect shot the officer in the lower leg and then ran away again, police said.

Another officer arrived at the scene and shot the suspect, who was identified as 43-year-old Warren Christian, according to police and the Lake County coroner’s office.

Christian; of the 500 block of West 144th Street in East Chicago, Indiana; was taken to Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Hammond, where he was pronounced dead at 4:26 p.m., authorities said.

The officer with a gunshot wound was also hospitalized. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force is investigating the shooting.
