IL Lawmakers Split on SCOTUS Immigration Decision

(CHICAGO) Illinois lawmakers are split along party lines on the Supreme Courts action on immigration.

U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Channahon) says he agrees with the High Court’s decision that Congress should play a role in immigration reform.

“This is a debate that belongs in Congress. It belongs in elections, election cycles, these are the debates to have,” Kinzinger said Thursday afternoon. “It does not belong in a president who decides he’s not getting what he wants, therefore makes an executive order. I agree with the idea of immigration reform. I think its something we need. I’ve been very outspoken about it but it’s something that has to be sustainable coming through the House of Representatives.”

But U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) says he is disappointed with the court decision. In a press release, he says the decision “leaves millions of families in indefinite limbo.”

Durbin was the first member of Congress to call for the establishment of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and the Dream Act.
