Cops: K-9 unit leads officers to armed robber in St. Charles

(ST. CHARLES) A K-9 unit led St. Charles police officers to the 18-year-old man who held up a 7-Eleven store at gunpoint early Sunday, according to police in the northwest suburb.

The robbery happened about 3:45 a.m. at the convenience store at 1705 W. Main St., St. Charles police said. No customers were in the store at the time, and no one was hurt.

A police dog called in from Elgin followed the trail from the cash register to an apartment building about a quarter-mile away in the 1600 block of Indiana Street, police said.

Four people in an apartment unit were questioned, and Kevin J. Hamilton was later arrested and charged with a felony count of armed robbery. Officers found the gun he used in a tree line outside the building, police allege.

Hamilton, a Streamwood resident, remained held at the Kane County Jail Sunday night.
