Trans Woman Sues City Over Topless Laws

By Bill Cameron. WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO) Mayor Emanuel and the City Council are being sued by a transgender woman who wants the right to dance topless in Chicago bars.

Strip clubs that serve liquor in Chicago are prohibited from having topless dancers. Transgender woman Bea Sullivan-Knoff says that violates her rights.

“Because the law as it currently stands is sexist and trans-phobic and allows people who have a certain body type to be able to perform in a certain way and prohibits people of other body types to do the exact same thing,” Sullivan-Knoff said. “I have been unable to perform at venues that I have wanted to, with the performances that I have wanted to perform.”

A federal judge will decide whether this issue deserves a trial.
