Adding Cops May Not Be As Expensive As First Thought

(CHICAGO) The added police officers in Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s new Public Safety Blueprint may not be as expensive as first thought.

Emanuel won’t say yet how he will pay for 500 new cops, but one of his critics, Ald. Scott Waugespack says that may be “a wash” because the initiative may “pay for itself.”

“If you’re hiring 100 a month and you’re losing anywhere between 50 and a 100 a month according to some of the records we’ve seen in the past, then you’re letting go some of the more expensive officers who have been on the force for 20 years plus an bringing on younger officers at a lower pay rate. That’s why I’d like to see some of the details of how that pans out month to month.”

The devil is often in the details and there will be added expense in the new training officers the mayor is promising.
