Chicago Aldermen Move to Protect Immigrants

(CHICAGO)  Chicago has something called the “Welcoming City Ordinance.” The mayor and the aldermen are adding a section to protect immigrants, whether legal or illegal,  from “physical abuse, threats or intimidation” by police or other city employees.

Debbie Lu of the Coalition for a Better Chinese-American community told the City Council Human Relations Committee why this is needed.  “Three years ago, Jessica Klyzek, a Chinese-American woman was assaulted by officers from the Chicago Police Department.   Caught on surveillance video, Chicago police officers, raided the tanning salon where Ms. Klyzek worked.”  One of the officers yelled, “You’re not (f-ing) American.  I’ll put you in a UPS box and I’ll send you to wherever the (f) you came from,” said Lu.

That victim sued, and got $150,000 from the city.
