(CHICAGO) A man who pleaded guilty to killing his ex-girlfriend, in Aurora, has been sentenced to almost 50 years in prison.
Heather Jacobi, a DuPage County Jail nurse, had an order of protection against her ex-boyfriend Jose Loera after the two had physical fights.
Prosecutors say when Loera found out that Jacobi had been exchanging texts with another man, he became enraged, and on March 28, 2014, he strangled her with a scarf, as she scratched his face.  Loera then used Jacobi’s stethoscope to make sure she was dead.
Loera returned home and tried to commit suicide but was found unconscious during a well-being check the next day, treated at a hospital, and then taken into police custody.
Loera pleaded guilty just as his trial was about to start, in late September.  He has been sentenced to 48 years in prison.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin says it’s essentially a life sentence for the 38-year old man and he says thoughts and prayers are with those who knew Heather Jacobi, particularly her children.
