Municipal ID In The Works For Immigrants

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO) At City Hall a new municipal ID is in the works to help immigrants get city services and the incoming City Clerk Anna Valencia is vowing not to let the feds use it against the undocumented.

There is a fear by some immigrant rights activists that the information collected for a municipal ID could be used by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to find and deport the undocumented.

Valencia says City Hall is at work on a legal way to prevent that.

“To find a secure way to make sure that our data can be secure,” Valencia said. Asked if she would share the ID data with ICE, she said no.

Meantime, Valencia sailed through her city council confirmation hearings in what can only be described as a love fest.
