Internet Privacy Bill Floated in Springfield

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO)  In Springfield, a couple of bills to give you the right-to-know how your personal information is being handled on the Internet have made it out of an Illinois House committee.

What the bills would do is limit what businesses could do with your personal information that they collect. They couldn’t sell it without your permission. Backers argued privacy rights, but Michael Reevers of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce testified it would be bad for business.

“It sends the message that we don’t want to encourage the next Chicago made Grub Hub, Motorola, Go-Go, Orbitz or Groupon,” Reevers said. “The impact would likely give pause to many companies already creating jobs in Chicago from Uber and Lyft to Amazon delivery and distribution centers, many areas that are often already left behind from economic growth.”

Amendments are being promised for this legislation, so don’t get your hopes up Springfield is going to give you much privacy on this issue.
