Push For Auto Insurance Equality

(CHICAGO) Some state senators are renewing their push to end what they say is discrimination in the auto insurance industry.

Legislation has been introduced in the past, but now lawmakers says they have new data to back up their effort. State Sen. Daniel Bill (D-Skokie) says the study from Consumer Reports and Pro-Publica found some drivers are paying at least 10-percent more for their insurance than their counterparts in other areas.

“They are charging more even after you adjust for risk to consumers of color and consumers in majority-minority neighborhoods then to white consumers and consumers in majority white neighborhoods.,” Biss said. “It’s racist, it’s wrong, we’ve got to fix it.”

State Sen. Jacqueline Collins (D-Chicago) is also a sponsor of the legislation.

“Thirty-three of 34 major Illinois auto insurance companies charge a driver living in a predominately minority zip code at least 10-percent more than a driver of the same age with similar safety records living in a predominately white zip code,” Collins said.

A bill pending in the senate bans auto insurance from using credit scores and zip codes to determine rates.
