(CHICAGO) Schaumburg police have made an arrest in the murder of a 26-year old woman whose body was found in her apartment this past Sunday.    Police have charged 29-year old Bulmaro Mejia-Maya with the murder and rape of Tiffany Thrasher, in the 2600 block of Clipper Drive.

Police Sergeant Christy Lindhurst told reporters that Mejia-Maya lived in a nearby building, but she does not know if he had ever had any contact with the victim.

“We do not know if she had any contact with him.  We have not been able to establish that.  It’s possible that their paths may have crossed due to the proximity of the buildings, however we have no evidence at this time to establish that.”

Mejia-Maya was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault and home invasion.   He was arrested Wednesday night in Jacksonville Florida, and faces an extradition hearing to be returned to Cook County to face charges.

Thrasher’s friends had reported her missing when she did not show up to sing in her church choir on Easter Sunday.   Her body was found later that day.

Police Lieutenant Michael DeGiulio is not commenting on a possible motive but he says no one else in Schaumburg is in danger.

“I want to assure the public there is no reason to believe anyone else was involved in this crime.  Within three days the Schaumburg Police Department arrested the person responsible for this crime.”

Police say they have 200 pieces of physical evidence.    They also say Mejia-Maya has made incriminating statements.
