Suburban Chicago son charged in axe attack on mom

WHEATON, Ill. (AP) — A suburban Chicago man accused of attacking his 80-year-old mom with an axe on the eve of Mother’s Day has been charged with aggravated domestic battery of a senior.

A statement from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office says a judge set bond for 57-year-old John Flick at $500,000 on Friday. The statement didn’t address the Downers Grove man’s possible motive.

The women’s daughter saw injuries on the mother’s face and head when she visited on Mother’s Day. And local hospital authorities later alerted police.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald quotes Flick’s lawyer, Patrick Weiland, as saying his client doesn’t know how his mother was injured.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin called the allegations “truly sickening” and “shocking.”

Flick’s next court hearing is on June 12.
