(CHICAGO) A woman struck by a piece of metal while walking through a business door has received the largest judgement ever for a personal injury case in DuPage County.

As Amy Skinger walked into a Wells Fargo mortgage retail office, in Aurora in 2012, the metal door closer unit detached, swung down and struck her in the head.  Her lawyer says his client had previously been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) and had a degenerative disease in her neck.  He says the incident aggravated her condition requiring surgery and a spinal cord pain pump.

Clifford Law Offices, which represented Skinger, said the entrance door had not been inspected for years.

It took a jury two hours to reach it’s verdict, awarding the victim $4.5 million for her disability, pain and suffering, emotional distress and medical bills.  Attorneys say, before the trial, the defendants offered to settle for 125-thousand dollars.
