Preckwinkle takes on Dart in county budget process

(CHICAGO) In the Cook County budget balancing process, President Toni Preckwinkle is scolding Sheriff Tom Dart again.

The County Board has approved millions more in legal settlements because of civil rights cases at the jail: nearly 5M for a traumatic brain injury, more than 3M to a woman raped in a lock-up.

Preckwinkle says Dart has got to do better because the settlements are really mounting up, adding “2015, 2016 and so far 2017 we’ve paid $25M in such claims. The sheriff and his team need to do a better job putting systems in place so that there are clear operational and managerial guidelines for the staff. This is disgraceful!”

Dart argues he’s trying to discipline bad officers but too many rules delay terminations.
