Budget compromise to replace $200M lost after pop tax repeal

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO) A budget compromise has emerged to replace the $200 million lost after the repeal of the pop tax.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle now claims to have a super-majority of 15 county board votes for 425 layoffs and the closing of about a thousand vacant positions. Hardest hit are middle managers in the budgets of Sheriff Tom Dart and Chief Judge Tim Evans.

Preckwinkle says she takes no joy in this, saying “There’s nothing pleasant about the need to impose hundreds of layoffs and what that could mean to services offered to county residents.”

The County Board will vote on the compromise Tuesday.
