Racial discrimination suit filed against Cook County Assessor

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO) A racial discrimination lawsuit has been filed by two community organizations against Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios.

The lawsuit argues that the way Berrios assesses property, the resulting property tax burden is disproportionately imposed on black and brown communities.

Berrios has adamantly denied there’s institutional racism in his operation, saying “No, I can say that in my seven years as assessor, I’ve continued to reach out to all the communities, including the minority communities. There is no racism in this administration and number one, I wouldn’t permit it.”

But the lawsuit will keep the fat on the fire as candidates from the governor on down the March 20th primary ballot keep trying to make Berrios a target.
