Audit reveals budget office goof costing state $2.5M

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(SPRINGFIELD) A new state audit is revealing an embarrassing failure by Governor Bruce Rauner’s administration. Some are saying it stems from the very incompetence Rauner has criticized.

The embarrassing failure is Rauner’s budget office failing to collect about two-and-a-half million dollars in federal rebates owed for payments the state makes on bond debt.

It’s the kind of financial mismanagement Rauner denounced three years ago in his inaugural address, “We are in the midst of a government financial crisis that has been building for decades. Its roots lie in bad decisions bad practices and bad management by state government.”

Rauner’s budget office is conceding its mistake and promises to do better.
