Head of Civilian Office for Police Accountability asked how independent of Rahm she can be

(CHICAGO) Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s nomination of Sydney Roberts to head-up the Civilian Office for Police Accountability has been approved by the City Council Public Safety Committee.

Roberts has inspector general experience at several agencies and now heads-up the police force of the Illinois Secretary of State.

During her confirmation hearing, Alderman Rick Munoz asked her how independent she can be from Mayor Emanuel.

Munoz: “I’ll just be direct on this. Who are you going to be reporting to?”

Roberts: “I believe that I report to the complaintant, to the person who has made an allegation. We have a duty to resolve that allegation as they presented it in an objective and fair manner.”

Meantime hearings on the three competing proposals to establish some community oversight of the police are now expected sooner than later.
