Mayor: Taxpayers won’t have to pay for high speed transit tunnel

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO) Mayor Emanuel and Elon Musk announced plans for a billion-dollar O’Hare to the Loop high speed transit tunnel.

Some are saying this sounds like election year pie in the sky to help re-elect Emanuel, but the mayor did say taxpayers won’t have to pay a single cent for it, and Musk said raising a billion would be no problem for him, “Well I don’t believe I have much trouble raising money historically.”

And for skeptics who think there are too many problems in the way, the mayor said, “Were there doubters when Chicago reversed the flow of the river? Yes. Where are they today? Were there doubters when Chicago said we’re gonna build the first skyscraper in America? Yes. Where are they today? My view is it’s easy to be a critic or a cynic. What jobs or economic growth do they produce?”

Musk said he could begin boring in 3 or 4 months and finish in two or three years.
