Rahm’s tax hike on home sharing services approved

(CHICAGO) Mayor Emanuel’s latest tax hike today got approved by the City Council License Committee.

This Rahm tax hike raises the 4% tax on home sharing services like Airbnb to 6%. The increase will be used to expand domestic violence programs.

Lincoln Park Alderman Michelle Harris thinks something else ought to go up on Airbnb and that’s its modest $10,000 a year city licensing fee.

“The city pays more to regulate Airbnb than Airbnb itself pays in licensing fees. The cost of that should be on Airbnb, not on their registrants and not on the taxpayers.”

Alderman Smith estimates city hall has already spent more than $2M regulating Airbnb.
