Reform group: ‘Officers troll our community so they can collect overtime pay.’

By Bill Cameron

(CHICAGO)  At City Hall, a coalition of reform groups is calling for changes that go beyond the federal consent decree on police brutality which Mayor Emanuel and Attorney General Madigan are proposing to the federal court.

This coalition wants the police to stop arresting people for minor offenses and instead divert them into programs that will change their behavior.

Ted Miin of Network 49 also wants an end to this practice, saying “Officers get time-and-a-half when their shifts are extended because they are processing arrests. This means they have a real financial incentive to find someone to arrest at the very end of their shift. Officers troll our community so that they can collect overtime pay.”

A final consent decree proposal is expected to be presented to a federal judge early next month.
