City gets $10M windfall in settlement with ride-sharing services

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO) Mayor Rahm Emanuel has announced a record $10 million settlement with Uber, Lyft and VIA ride-sharing services for not doing their background checks properly.

Ride-share drivers aren’t supposed to have multiple-moving violations nor have done time for a crime for five years. The mayor says Uber, Lyft and VIA had a faulty process to weed them out.

“It’s not a choice,” Emanuel noted, “ The ordinance doesn’t say on Monday and Tuesday it applies, but on Wednesday it won’t.  It has to be applied consistently and you have to follow through.”

So he says he’s going to use the $10M to expand mentoring to at-risk kids down to the 6th grade.
