Mayor calls out judges at police consent decree announcement

(CHICAGO) Mayor Emanuel, Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Police Supt. Eddie Johnson gathered for a press conference today to re-announce the police reform consent decree, but the mayor added one new admonition.

Rahm’s new admonition was to call out the judges.

“There people who see people coming in and out of the criminal justice system that spent no time penalties for the crimes that they commit,” said the mayor, “It deteriorates peoples’ confidence that someone’s going to be held accountable for the crimes that they commit. So, I would just say to you while we are here appropirately to focus on the police part of this equation, you have a responsibility to start asking other questions of other people in the criminal justice system that also has lost the public’s confidence. If you just only think it’s about the police dept, you’re not dealing with the whole equation when it comes to public safety.”

Judges disagree saying they have to apply the law which frequently allows suspects to go free.
