(CHICAGO) In the race for mayor, Cook County Board President and County Democratic chairwoman Toni Preckwinklem has officially declared her candidacy at a Hyde Park hotel where Harold Washington declared for mayor and Barack Obama declared for the U.S. Senate.

Preckwinkle jumped in the old fashioned way with lots of enthusiastic supporters around her.

She promised an elected school board, a new emphasis on improving neighborhoods not just downtown and redefining how to get at street violence noting, “This isn’t about who commits crime. It’s about who is most vulnerable to arrest and who, once detained, is too poor to pay for their freedom.”

Preckwinkle is a top-tier candidate but her announcement comes just as she had to fire her chief of staff for an apparent #MeToo incident outside of work.
