(CHICAGO) The death of infamous police commander Jon Burge has Mayor Emanuel talking about the past and future of police conduct.
Emanuel says the Fraternal Order of Police is “wrong” to defend Jon Burge.
“While we took actions for the victims of Jon Burge actions in the way he put a scar in my view on the city and the police department which is a noble profession and the men and women that serve,” said Emanuel, “We closed on chapter and I hope brought some closure to the family members, but also took the responsibility of opening another chapter, one I think that brings some finality to it.”
And that chapter, he says, is about the many police reforms to come from the federal consent decree on police conduct.
The Mayor ducked on which of the three community police oversight proposals he prefers. He also ducked on what he thinks of any of the candidates who want to succeed him.
