(CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill.) — Chicago Heights Mayor David Gonzalez has won approval from the city council to lower the mayor’s annual salary from $40,000 to $1,000.

“Chicago Heights, like other south suburban communities, faces tough budget challenges, so I decided that sacrifice should start at the top and that’s why I proposed cutting the mayor’s annual salary from $40,000 to $1,000,” Gonzalez said. “If a municipal budget needs to be cut, it should start with the mayor himself or herself.”

The Chicago Heights City Council approved the change to the mayor’s annual compensation.

The pay cut will take effect at the first regular meeting of the new City Council in June 2019.

Gonzalez has been mayor of the south suburban community since 2011.
