Washington state is doing away with the death penalty, after the state Supreme Court ruled that it violated the state’s constitution.

The five-judge panel unanimously voted it down, saying the death penalty is “imposed in an arbitrary and racially biased manner”. The eight people currently on death row in Washington will be sentenced to life in prison instead.

Washington has not executed a prisoner since 2010. Only 30 U.S. states still use the death penalty.
