Transgender woman wins cycling championship, sparks debate

A Canadian transgender woman has made history and sparked a controversy after winning a world cycling championship.

Dr. Rachel McKinnon, who was born male, took the gold in her age bracket at the UCI Masters Track Cycling World Championships on Sunday. Afterwards, she tweeted ‘First transgender woman world champion…ever”.

The win has sparked a debate over whether people who are born male have a natural advantage over cisgender women. McKinnon, who also hosts a Youtube channel about transgender issues, has defended herself by calling it an matter of “fairness and human rights”
