Survey shows widespread ‘moral distress’ among veterinarians

A new study led by a bioethicist at Harvard Medical School is finding that veterinarians are majorly stressed out by their jobs in caring for our pets.

Dr. Lisa Moses is a veterinarian at the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-Angell Animal Medical Center as well as a bioethicist at Harvard. She says there is a great amount of “moral distress” being felt by those caring for our pets.

The trouble for vets comes in the form of pet owners often asking them to do things for their pets that go against what may be best for the pet ultimately.

Dr. Virginia Sinnott-Stutzman is a senior staff vet and is often troubled by owners who have a pet euthanized because they can’t afford care for the pet. Other times, she sees owners who force medical care on a pet that should be allowed to die with dignity.
