College Athlete Dies Abruptly from Rare Disease

Samantha Scott was from Colorado and became a member of the Kansas State University rowing team when she got Lemierre’s Syndrome, a rare infection caused by bacteria in lymph nodes found in the neck.

Just a couple of weeks prior to her death, Scott believed that she just had a common sore throat. This is a common symptom of the disease.

It is normally treated with antibiotics, but in certain cases it can be fatal when not treated right away.

Lemierre’s Syndrome is rare, with usually only one person in a million contracting it. Recently cases have been increasing.

Prior to the availability of antibiotics, Lemierre’s Syndrome would kill over 90 percent of those who came down with it.
