Alaska Man Sentenced for Faking Death to Avoid Prison

A fisherman from Alaska is going to jail after he tried to fake his own death to avoid prison.

The Coast Guard spent over $300,000 searching for 35-year-old Ryan Meganack. His girlfriend was in on the plan and reported him missing off Port Graham.

Investigators discovered that he abandoned his boat, came back ashore and hid out near his mother’s house. Meganack’s plan was to flee Alaska after the search was over.

The case was cracked when Meganack’s girlfriend admitted he was alive to his grieving parents. He will spend an extra 15 months in jail for faking his death consecutive to the 15 years he was sentenced to serve on sexual assault charges from 2016.
