Daley: “Elected officials” discourage tough sentences for gun crimes

(CHICAGO)  In the race for mayor, Bill Daley is out with his plan to combat crime.

Daley wants to boost the use of cameras and drones plus give teenagers even more alternatives to the street gangs, but he’s also saying county officials – including Toni Preckwinkle by implication – are actually discouraging tough sentences for gun crimes and failing to express outrage over shootings.

Daley said “Those that are elected officials better double down on efforts for what they can do today.”

Preckwinkle is making no apology for her approach, noting  “Our criminal justice efforts have been focused on trying to be sure that we re-allocate resources for those who are accused of violent crimes and try to be sure that those who are accused of non-violent crimes do not spend the time between their arrest and the disposition of their cases in jail.”
