Progressives making progress at City Hall

(CHICAGO) A big financial perk for developers called tax increment financing was in danger Monday at City Hall. A vote on reforming TIFs was delayed until today (Tuesday) because progressive aldermen were on the verge Monday of approving changes.

Embattled Alderman Ed Burke didn’t have the votes to stop the progressives and so he arranged a quorum call to delay the vote for a day so that enough No votes could be rounded up.

Ald Scott Waguespack, the leader of the progressives, had won a battle but not the war.

“I think that people realize that we’re doing the right thing by making sure that we’re trying to follow the law here, that times have changed and the way they’ve gone about this over several years in wrong-headed.”

The episode is symbolic of the rising power of the progressives and the declining power of Ed Burke.
