Surgeon General Warns Of E-Cigarette ‘Epidemic’

U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams is calling for changes to stem the ‘epidemic’ of e-cigarette use among teenagers.

In a news conference Tuesday, Adams called for ‘aggressive steps’ to keep vaping products like Juul out of the hands of people under 18, saying nicotine vapes “can promote dependence in just a few uses.”

A survey released this week found that use of e-cigarettes among students doubled in 2018, with 1 in 5 admitting to using them. Juul products account for about 75% of the market.

Earlier this year, the FDA passed new restrictions on sales of e-cigarettes, making it harder for teens to purchase them in convenience stores or online.
