This Friday is the shortest day of the year

Winter officially begins Friday at 5:23pm EST when the winter solstice begins, marking the shortest day – and longest night – of the year.

How much sunlight are we in for? The northern U.S. will only see between 8 and 9 hours of sunlight on Friday, while southern states will get closer to 10 hours. The city of Fairbanks, Alaska will only see the sun for about 3 hours and 41 minutes.

Also, scientists say that the Earth’s rotation is slowing slightly each year, which means this year’s winter solstice could very well be the longest night in the entire history of the Earth.
