Fewer Babies Are Being Born in the United States

The number of babies being born in the United States has been declining to a point where we won’t be able to replace ourselves.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the “total fertility rate” must be “2,100 births per 1,000 women” in order for this to become reality. The numbers right now are showing “1,765.5 births per 1,000 women”.

The fertility rate has been on a steady decline for just under a decade.

“In general women are getting married later in life,” Dr. John Rowe said. “They are leaving the home and launching their families later.”

Other factors include the trend of having a smaller family and fewer teenage pregnancies.

“I think it may stabilize once women who have been postponing pregnancy have the births they are planning to have,” says Dr. Donna Strobino.
