New anti-corruption idea from mayoral candidate Garry McCarthy

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO) In the race for mayor and in the wake of the attempted extortion charge against Ald Ed Burke, former Police Supt Garry McCarthy has a new proposal to do something new to combat City Council corruption.

McCarthy is proposing a new City Council Review Board, led by a retired judge, to oversee police settlements, gerrymandering of ward maps and the big developer tool called tax increments financing.

But he’s fuzzy about just what entity could enact this oversight.

“What entity? I would say the citizens of Chicago because that’s what’s started everything else that’s happening here.”

It would probably take an act of the legislature or a binding referendum to do this, but McCarthy says what we’re doing now isn’t working. at city hall
