(CHICAGO)  In the race for mayor, Lori Lightfoot has a new and unusual take on the attempted extortion charge against Ald. Ed Burke.

Lightfoot has been very tough on Ed Burke during the campaign, but this former federal prosecutor tells me the feds charging Burke and then asking for a delay until May gives Burke’s lawyers an opening. Here’s what she says Burke’s lawyers could argue.

“Hey! You chose the timing of this. Don’t tell us now you’re not ready. It’s not fair to my client to have this Sword of Damocles hanging over his head when he’s fighting for his political life.

In any case, Lightfoot doesn’t think the feds had any political motive in charging Burke in front of an election.
