The Department of Energy has revealed that it moved a half metric ton of weapons-grade plutonium from South Carolina to Nevada, despite objections from Nevada lawmakers.

The DoE declassified the information that the plutonium had been moved from a Savannah River site in SC to a nuclear site in NV. Officials made the information public, citing that they felt enough time had passed since the move to not affect national security. The route of the move was not disclosed.

Despite lawmakers in NV asking the move to be halted until the DoE could study the environmental and safety impacts of the move on the state, the DoE moved the plutonium in August.

Nevada lawmakers then went nuclear, with the governor stating that the DoE “lied to the state of Nevada, misled a federal court and jeopardized the safety” of residents.

State officials say they plan to hold the Trump administration responsible over the covert operation.
