Van Dyke sentenced challenged

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO) Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and Kane County States Attorney Joe McMahon are asking the state supreme court to review the 81 month sentence of former cop Jason Van Dyke for killing Laqan Mcdonald.

They are asking the court to say whether it was legal for Judge Vincent Gaughan to sentence Van Dyke for second degree murder and not on 16 counts of aggravated assault.

When WLS asked Raoul if he thinks the sentence was too light, he said this:

“This is not a question of whether I believe, and I’m not gonna opine on my opinion on the length of the sentence.  What I will opine on is whether or not the law should be followed and I believe the law should be followed.”

And he said it’s “nonsense” for anybody to think politics played any role in his challenge.
