Former astronaut Mark Kelly has already been to space, and how he’s headed to the final frontier – Congress.
Kelly, a retired space shuttle commander and husband to former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, announced he’ll run as a Democrat for the Senate seat formerly held by the late John McCain.
Kelly and Giffords have been strong advocates for stricter gun laws ever since Giffords was shot during a public event in 2011. Kelly also plans to make health care and climate change focal points of his campaign.
McCain’s seat is currently held by Republican Martha McSally, who was appointed last year by the governor. But by state law a special election must be held next year to fill the remaining two years of McCain’s term.
