(PALOS PARK, Ill.) — A south suburban police department is warning of a common Social Security scam that now includes claims of an investigation by the Department of Homeland Security.

Palos Park Police are warning of a phone scam where the caller tries to get their Social Security number. In once such case, police say the caller says a vehicle, tied to their Social Security number, has been stopped at the U.S. – Mexico border with illegal drugs and – in trying to convince them to give their social – says that the matter is now part of a Department of Homeland Investigation.

In some cases, callers tell the potential victims that their assets will be frozen until the victim sends money in the form of a Google Play card.

Officials say if you ever get a call from someone demanding money, or suspect you might be getting scammed, call the police.
