Sailor From Iconic V-J Day Kiss Photo Dies At 95

A sailor whose celebratory kiss at the end of World War II was captured in one of the most iconic photos in U.S. history has died at the age of 95.

A LIFE magazine photographer snapped the famous photo of a sailor kissing a nurse on V-J Day on August 14th, 1945. Years later, the two people were identified as George Mendonsa and Greta Zimmer Friedman.

Mendonsa died Sunday at an assisted living facility in Middletown, RI just two days short of his 96th birthday. Friedman died in 2016 at age 92.
